RED BARONS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Red Barons Memorial Scholarship honors two pilots who flew the #2 and #4 positions in the squadron. Sonny Lovelace and Randy Drake were killed in 1998 while performing in a charity air show to benefit the ICAS Foundation. The Foundation has made this scholarship available for student pilots to acquire training in aerobatic flight. The Red Baron Memorial Scholarships provides funds for two  pilots so that they might increase their aeronautical knowledge and insight, and that they, in turn, will be able to make a contribution of service to the aviation community. This scholarship was proposed by the Red Baron families and team members to memorialize the dedication to aviation excellence that pilots Jim “Sonny” Lovelace and Randy Drake demonstrated throughout their lifetimes.  The recipient of the Red Barons Memorial Scholarship will be selected by a committee headed by Kathleen Drake (widow of Randy Drake).  Kay is joined by Pat Lovelace (widow of Sonny Lovelace) and Red Baron pilots John Bowman and Bryan Regan.

About The Red Baron Squadron
Born as a temporary marketing promotion with the introduction of Red Baron Frozen Pizza in 1979, the Red Baron Squadron has become one of the premier formation aerobatic air show acts in the world today. What makes the Squadron unique is the authentic antique aircraft that the Squadron flies, bringing to life the "Golden Age of Aviation", the period between World Wars One and Two when airspeed records were broken regularly and the aerobatic and race pilots of the day were celebrities.

The Red Baron Squadron is comprised of a fleet of seven Stearman biplanes. These aircraft were military trainers for the Army Air Corps and the Navy in the Second World War, and were one of the last biplane designs used in military service. All the Squadron's airplanes are over 57 years old, and several were used as crop-dusting aircraft before being converted back to passenger carrying status.

Four of these vintage aircraft perform aerobatics in close formation at air shows throughout North America each year, bringing excitement and entertainment to thousands of spectators. In addition, media representatives and selected guests of the Red Baron brand have an opportunity to fly with the Squadron, experiencing the thrill of open-cockpit aviation first hand.

Qualifications: The recipient must hold a private pilot certificate or international equivalent, be at least 16 years old, and use the scholarship for aerobatic flight training. Scholarship Amount: $2,000.
