2003 Scholarship Winners In 2003, the Foundation awarded six scholarships, each in memory of an air show star who has passed on. The scholarships are funded through designated donations from the Foundation’s annual Silent Auction fundraiser and other corporate donations. The 2003 winners are: Jan Jones Memorial Scholarship - Marjorie Melchreit of Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Marj is a commercial and instrument rated Certified Flight Instructor who wants to become proficient in aerobatic flight and eventually teach others. French Connection Memorial Scholarship – Laura Zook of Fort Wayne, Indiana and Eyal Golan Breiter of Winter Haven, Florida. Laura is a Certified Flight Instructor who also enjoys ballroom dancing. She plans to use her scholarship to increase her knowledge and profiency in spins and upset training. Eyal is a full-time college student majoring in Political Science and a part-time flight instructor at a Florida seaplane base. Red Barons Memorial Scholarship – Kelly Stites of Tuscon, Arizona. Kelly is already a flight instructor, but plans to use her scholarship to gain more time on her tailwheel endorsement and move into tailwheel and aerobatic instruction. Charlie Hillard Memorial Scholarship - Shelley Anne Sailor of Pinedale, Wyoming. Shelley is a certified Wilderness Responder who works as a firefighter. Her aviation goal is to work in the aviation industry as a helicopter pilot for search and rescue and firefighting, and to complete a Bachelor’s degree in Aviation Science. Leo Loudenslager Memorial Scholarship – SSgt Don Yeats of the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds. Don is currently a member of the Thunderbirds’ support crew, and was selected by a combined panel of Air Force Thunderbirds and Navy Blue Angels officers.
